DENVER (February 28, 2013) – AOL’s MapQuest today announces the launch of Travel Blogs, a feature designed to help travelers seamlessly capture and share their adventures within an online travel journal while encouraging others to set out on their own journey. This is the second product introduction for the brand as it develops into a platform that helps inspire people where to go, plan how to get there and share their experiences.

Travel Blogs is available through a new iPhone app available for download and on desktop allowing users to create visual archives of their trips using photographs, stories, reviews of places they visited and the route traveled.

“MapQuest has a great history of helping people get to where they want to go,” says Brian McMahon, General Manager of MapQuest, “and now we’re growing the brand to have a role beyond setting directions. With tools like Travel Blogs, we’re building a product ecosystem that enhances the traveler’s experience at each step in the journey.”

The free travel blog app works both on and offline, so users can create a travel journal by adding images and other content even when they don’t have an Internet connection. This comes in handy for travelers visiting locations beyond where their mobile data plans provide coverage.

Once online, the app can sync to update the blog. From there, blogs can be shared at anytime through the user’s social channels or via email through an individually curated distribution list. In the coming months, authors will also be able to turn their blogs into a physical photo book.

Users can choose to keep their blogs private, but those who allow for public viewing will have their blogs be part of a larger collection of content throughout MapQuest Discover, the brand’s social travel platform, and the AOL network. The aim is to spark curiosity and inspiration for others to set off on their own adventures.

“Content is an important part of any digital product,” says McMahon, “and Travel Blogs will help us build out our existing catalogue of authentic stories designed to inspire readers to hit the road again or book that next flight.”

Some examples of MapQuest Travel Blogs include:

DENVER (November 13, 2012) – Today, MapQuest, a wholly owned subsidiary of AOL Inc. (NYSE: AOL), announces MapQuest Discover, one of several upcoming tools focused on the complete travel experience: discovering, planning, exploring and documenting the places where the map meets life. MapQuest Discover is part of the ongoing evolution of MapQuest’s products and services designed to help enhance a traveler’s journey.

At launch, MapQuest Discover features a social platform that encourages destination discovery through photos, allowing users to create and share collections and photos from trips they’ve taken or are currently planning.

“MapQuest Discover captures how a traveler gets inspired,” said Francis Lobo, senior vice president of AOL Services. “As one user’s collections pique another’s interest, the MapQuest Discover platform spurs continued travel and shared experiences.”

MapQuest Discover
This beta release of MapQuest Discover focuses on places, inspiring you to explore and share with customized collections of destinations in a photo or map format.

Components of MapQuest Discover include:
•	Collections: a feature that allows users to create and share collections of their favorite places (“My favorite pubs” or “The Best Golf Courses in North America”), the trips they’ve been on or their bucket lists filled with places they want to go. Collections have a leaderboard which shows who’s been to the most places in that collection, encouraging good natured bragging rights (“I’ve been to 49 of the 50 states!”).
•	Newsfeed: an infinite scroll of interesting places, popular collections and guides by professional travel writers to inspire you. Users can quickly Like a place, mark that they have Been to a place, or add a place to one of their own Collections. Popular collections are influenced by user’s favorites and featured higher in the news feed.
•	Passport: a user’s “Passport” serves as their profile page and shows all the places a user has been, collections created, and more.
•	Travel Content: access to hundreds of travel guides written by travel experts, inspiring articles about top travel destinations to help make travel planning even easier.

In addition to launching MapQuest Discover, the team is revamping MapQuest Local pages about states, cities, places, and neighborhoods to now include reviews, deals, travel guides and related collections from MapQuest Discover for more convenient trip planning.

“Since more than 84 percent of all domestic trips in the United States are taken in a car*, we believe MapQuest is perfectly suited to act as a true virtual concierge,” said Brian McMahon, General Manager of MapQuest. “This is just the beginning of a complete suite of helpful products and tools you’ll be seeing from MapQuest over the next several months to help travelers discover, plan, experience and share their journeys.”

Algorithmic Rankings Help Consumers Better Engage on a Local Level

DENVER (October 13, 2011) – MapQuest, a wholly owned subsidiary of AOL Inc. (NYSE: AOL), today announced the launch of “MapQuest Vibe” (beta), which generates and features real-time rankings of neighborhoods, local hotspots and points-of-interest using sophisticated algorithms. Helping people become a local, anywhere, the product can be found at www.mqvibe.com and is the latest feature by the 15-year veteran of online maps, directions and local discovery.

“MapQuest Vibe helps people cut through the ratings clutter by providing actual rankings based on key criteria within a richer neighborhood context,” said Vijay Bangaru, vice president of product, MapQuest. “Presenting neighborhood data in a structure that’s enhanced by geographic context is critical to accelerating exploration of what’s around you. We believe we have a unique platform to give people contextually relevant information that helps them make decisions.”

MapQuest’s community of more than 39 million unique visitors each month* creates a large user base for this new, social-algorithmic platform. Leveraging 10 years of MapQuest search logs, mqVibe provides a unique neighborhood perspective through rankings of restaurants, shopping, services and cultural attractions, among other significant insights.

MapQuest Vibe Features + Functionalities
Vibe Score: The Vibe Score is a proprietary ranking used to profile 50,000 neighborhoods, 27,000 cities and 50,000 hotspots within MapQuest Vibe. To help put rankings into perspective, each score is generated by interactions on MapQuest.com, cartographic analysis and user signals to derive proprietary MapQuest neighborhood characteristics such as:
-Popularity: A measurement of how many visitors come to the neighborhood compared with other neighborhoods in the state
-Going Out: The variety, quantity, and quality of bars, restaurants, nightclubs, and other entertainment venues in the neighborhood
-Residential: A comparison of the number of homes in the neighborhood with the number of businesses
-“Burby”: The neighborhood’s commercialized nature considering things like the prevalence of national chains
-Edgy: Determination of how likely an area has grittier or colorful aspects of urban society in that neighborhood
-Walkability: A guide to how easy it is to access common daily amenities in the neighborhood without needing to drive to a place

Vibe Rank: Vibe Score is compiled through a variety of Vibe Ranks on restaurants, shopping, services and more, as well as the hotspots. Through a number of different signals, MapQuest Vibe ranks POIs and the neighborhoods that contain them based on the social and local interactions.

Voting: MapQuest Vibe’s voting system allows individuals to vote up or down a local business. Unlike traditional ratings sites, these votes combine with underlying walkability, popularity, going out nature, edginess, and burbiness scores, to ultimately create the comprehensive Vibe Score. Voting also influences the location of local hotspots, causing new ones to appear and old ones to change shape or disappear.

Sharing: The game framework harnesses social and local influence, as well as overall engagement, allowing the individual’s experience to be easily shared with friends and the community via Facebook.

“When you think about it, neighborhoods are fuzzy by nature – constantly changing as businesses come in and out of service and people’s interests shift,” said Simon Hill, principal product manager, MapQuest. “MapQuest Vibe evolves in the same way, providing current information to help people feel like a local wherever they are and wherever they visit. Additionally, the voting mechanism helps create wider local community purpose that reflects the online, social and physical reality of urban communities.”

Context: Local business can compete with similar businesses at the local hotspots level – such as the restaurants across the street – as well as at the neighborhood or city levels. The ranking’s rise or fall at different levels lends a merchant real feedback that can help drive business changes and decisions. Discovery is easily facilitated by searching for a neighborhood, by category and by type.

How MapQuest Vibe Works
MapQuest Vibe is easy to use by:
-Visiting www.mqvibe.com, which automatically populates the user’s current city or neighborhood
-Looking up neighborhoods directly with the “find” field in the site’s upper right corner; neighborhoods immediately reflect the most popular and most frequented hotspots or clusters of businesses on streets, intersections and within town centers
-Determining the best-ranked businesses in each of the following categories: dining out, shopping, activities, beauty and spas, local services, health and med, and lodging and accommodations
-Supporting and following the preferred points of interest by liking them and voting for or against them
-Spreading the word about these places on Facebook by sharing the vote

MapQuest Vibe: The Local, Social, Mobile Experience
MapQuest Vibe can be reached via mqVibe.com or by clicking the “neighborhoods” button on MapQuest.com. Some 54 percent of MapQuest’s 6.6 million daily inquiries are for destinations within 25 miles of a person’s point of origin.** MapQuest reaches one in five Internet users**and, with the majority searching for local information, it serves as a perfect platform for a deep integration of the new mqVibe product. The data becomes more robust, providing more accurate rankings and helping people make better, individualized decisions.

“Our users have long been using MapQuest to discover what’s in and around their area, but with more than 18 million domestic points of interest, we felt there was a need to dive deeper into what we could deliver to our users,” said Christian Dwyer, general manager and senior vice president, MapQuest. “MapQuest Vibe takes that enormous pool of information and helps people make better decisions on what appeals to them using the social heart and wisdom of the crowds.”

Frequently accessed through a mobile device, local information leads to local experiences thus driving the need for a smartphone and mobile web app for MapQuest Vibe. Both are planned to launch in the near future, including additional elements such as deals, gamification and check-ins.

*comScore, September 2011
**Internal data

                                                             # # #

About MapQuest
MapQuest provides Internet, mobile and business solutions delivering on the promise of helping people research and discover: where is it, how to get there and what’s nearby. MapQuest is one of the leading mapping brands online, offering maps and directions, and reaching more than 39.0 million users in September 2011, according to comScore Media Metrix.

Gas-efficiency Features Include Fuel Cost Calculator, Ways to Improve Gas Consumption and Alternative Fuel Options

DENVER (March 11, 2011) – MapQuest, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of AOL Inc. (NYSE: AOL), helps drivers find the lowest prices on gas in their hometowns, near the office or just out for errands. According to INRIX, drivers are experiencing an average 10 percent increase in travel times*, news that comes on the heels of the U.S. Energy Department’s projection for continued increase in gas prices through the spring and summer**. MapQuest helps drivers keep an eye on fuel costs and the lowest gas prices within a searched area with tools found at gasprices.mapquest.com.

“MapQuest’s gas-efficiency tools lay the groundwork for consumers – especially those facing long daily commutes – to save money every day with simple, smart ways to conveniently find the cheapest gas prices in their area or around their destination,” said Christian Dwyer, senior vice president and general manager, MapQuest. “Gas prices heavily impact our customers and their families, so we work hard to provide tools that improve not just their experience with us, but also their lifestyles as well.”

Find the Lowest Prices on Gas
MapQuest’s gas pricing tool is quick and easy to use. At gasprices.mapquest.com, simply select a city and state or type in a zip code to find the lowest-priced gas in that area. Additional specifications can be made such as alternative fuel stations or different fuel grades, as well as sorting stations by distance or price. To use the gas consumption calculator at the top of the map, drivers must enter their total trip distance, miles per gallon, and the cost per gallon.

Additional tools on MapQuest.com may help consumers plan more effectively with replacement options, including:

Alternate Routes: This tool offers between three and five alternative route options that may provide a more efficient route or that may lead drivers by gas stations offering lower prices.

Map Toolbar: Perhaps a lunch-break trip to the convenience store may save the gas it would take to drive there on the way home. The business locator, found on the map toolbar, pinpoints businesses in the searched area pertaining to a specific need or interest.

Pedestrian Routing: Running those errands can be even easier with simple pedestrian directions from MapQuest. The new nationwide pedestrian mode allows walking travelers to be routed down one-way streets, pedestrian malls, through parks and along designated paths.

Transit Routing: Additionally, a new rail transit option links the pedestrian mode with public rail transportation routing in New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Philadelphia, Washington D.C. and Boston, reaching roughly 90 percent of the nation’s rail ridership.***

“MapQuest updates gas and diesel prices up to seven times a day,” said Ann Koerner, director of consumer products, MapQuest. “We also know many Americans spend upwards of an hour commuting, which makes efficient route planning even more meaningful. MapQuest offers a variety of tools to make the most of driving trips, but also understand alternative means of transportation that may not involve getting in the car at all.”

DENVER (March 3, 2011) – MapQuest, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of AOL Inc. (NYSE: AOL), today announced the launch of additional routing options with bike and pedestrian directions available on each of its 27 open-source sites, and a domestic transit solution in six U.S. cities.

MapQuest’s new bicycle and pedestrian routing options seamlessly integrate with the existing features for bug reporting, editing and user improvement. These new features are powered by the OpenStreetMap crowd-sourced database.

“The beauty of crowd-sourced maps is that the locals truly offer expert knowledge on what they know, see, do, travel by and experience,” said Christian Dwyer. “Roads are extremely relevant to drivers, but if you travel by foot or bike, certain routes may make more sense. These new global features cater to those who are not traveling by car, as well as leverage the rich biking and walking path data captured by the community.”

Available on open.mapquest.com in six domestic markets, the transit option provides an additional routing solution to urbanites in the metro areas of New York, Chicago, Washington, D.C., Boston, Philadelphia and San Francisco, reaching roughly 90 percent of the nation’s rail ridership*. This capability was originally only provided on MapQuest.com.

“We like to say this is a map for the people, by the people, and it’s important for MapQuest to continually expand the tools, imagery and solutions for the growing needs in every community across the globe,” said Antony Pegg, principal product manager. “It’s simply not enough for MapQuest to solely make the data available; we want to make it usable to the average consumer in meaningful ways that help inform their decisions.”

With more U.S. individuals now residing in urban settings rather than suburban or rural**, there is an even greater need to provide relevant information and routing to MapQuest’s growing city contingency: The new nationwide pedestrian mode allows walking travelers to be routed down one-way streets, pedestrian malls, through parks and along designated paths; while the new transit routing option provides departure and arrival information, helpful hints to alert train passengers, and station search information in designated cities.

“MapQuest is in the business of getting people where they need to go,” said Christian Dwyer, senior vice president and general manager, MapQuest. “We are excited to launch both the nationwide pedestrian mode and the new transit routing option on MapQuest.com to reach urban commuters who rely on alternative modes of transportation.”

On average, some 14.7 million people*** use metro public rail options in the six launch cities:

Washington D.C.

Chicago

Boston

San Francisco Bay

Philadelphia

“The new MapQuest routing options for walking directions and transit can work separately or together to meet customers’ preferences,” said Ann Koerner, director of consumer products, MapQuest. “MapQuest has always listened to our customer needs. The pedestrian mode and rail transit option are a direct response to one of the top requested features from our customers, and help us continue to be the trusted source for all types of maps and directions.”

On average, MapQuest receives more than 1 million inquiries for directions each day. The new pedestrian routing and rail transit option add layers of environmentally conscious features to MapQuest’s growing suite of world-class routing solutions.
